First, a combination lock is one that requires a combination of numbers on a dial to open the lock instead of a key. Apparently Jobs and his friends shared ("traded") each others combinations (the series of numbers) to open their respective locks. He and one fo his friends removed the locks from their friends' bikes using the numbers that had been shared. Then they placed the locks randomly on the bikes without remembering or recording which locks were placed on which bikes.
