naked and nude?

I am writing to ask the difference of naked from nude as a way to understnand better the poetry "the naked and the nude" of an American wtiter.

If you mean the poem by Robert Graves, he's distinguishing between:

1. nakedness = a natural state of "being without clothes": we are naked when we wash, or when we are examined by a doctor.

2. nudity = an artificial state of "being without clothes": we are nude when we want to use our nakedness for a special purpose, such as attracting someone's attention, or posing for a photograph or a painting.

Not everyone would agree with Graves, however, so it's best not to treat them as if they were dictionary definitions!

(If you did mean Graves, by the way, he was English, not American.)

To be naked is to be oneself. To be nude is to be seen by others and yet not recognized for oneself. A naked body has to be seen as an object in order to become a nude. (The sight of it as an object stimulates the use of it as an object.) Nakedness reveals itself. Nudity is placed on display. To be naked is to be without disguise. To be on display is to have the surface of one's own skin, the hairs of one's body turned into a disguise which, in that situation, can never be discarded. The nude is condemned to never being naked.
