"White coat" sounds like thick furred clothes, but does "coat" also mean a light gown?
ex)Why do doctors wear green gowns instead of white coats during surgery? There is a scientific reason behind it....

Yes, a coat need not be heavy. For example, a raincoat could be made of light plastic. The white coats referred to here are those characteristically worn by doctors doing their rounds, or scientists in their laboratories, with a nice big pocket for pens.
