I think it's British. In Canada we say go to the washroom (ladie's washrrom & men's washroom), I think the Americans say bathroom.

Other expressions:
go to the can
go to little girls' room/ little boys' room
go on the potty
to go and sit on the throne

"the" is required: go to the toilet.

There's a great deal on-line, Itasan. Here are a few sites that'll tickle you pink:

Western Canada: (male) I gotta see a man about a horse.
Northern Canada: (male) I gotta go wring (out) my sock(s).

Female (polite): I have to powder my nose. (archaic, but still in use)

Common: I gotta go!

My brother-in-law: I gotta go bake a chicken.

"I gotta wring out my sock" ???

I am not familiar with this one but it sure sounds disgusting!

My brother-in-law: I gotta go bake a chicken.

Are you sure it wasn't brownies? ( just as disgusting...chicken would definitely sound better !)

It's just a wet sock, M. The implication, I had to go, but couldn't make it to the can. Result, socks are wet now, so I best go and wring 'em out.

Well, according to my bro-in-law, brownies don't smell like a chicken that's been baking.

Well, we are sure having an intelligent discussion here.
Yes, now that makes sense what you said. I don't know why I didn't think about it.
As for the chickem and brownies, both smell delicious ... in the kitchen, that is.

The most ridiculous is the 'doughnut in grannie's greenhouse', which isn't heard much nowadays.

What about "go sit on the john"?
We Americans say, "go to the potty", too.
We also say, "Where's the restroom?" or "I need to go to the restroom."

Edit: Yes, we say "#1 and #2".
