Question Based on the first example?

Hi there. I am preparing for the TOEFL IBT and I still have some problems with my writing. In the integrated writing, the lecturer gives some examples to support his/her ideas. When I write an essay about it, I usually use some phrases such as "Based on the first/second example" etc. However I could not find such idioms on the web when I googled them. Is it okay to use such phrases? Are they considered appropriate in academic essays?
    Thanks in advance.

Unless there is something very specific about academic essays, I see no problem with "Based on the xxxx example ..."
This is not an idiom, though.
