sir/madam,
kindly reply me. following sentences are corect or not? if correct, kindly explain the meaning
I never do this
I never did this
Thank you
"I never do this" -- said while you are in the act of doing something completley unlike you. Perhaps you're the "good girl" and you're sneaking into the community pool for a midnight swim. Or maybe you're ordering a really decadent dessert.
I never did this -- I find this an unlikely sentence.
I've never done this before -- easily understood.
I never did that -- a denial
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
Or "I didn't do that", which many people would prefer, and which is as strong a denial.
If a teenager is being accused of having burnt down a classroom on Saturday night, "I did not do it" is sufficient. "I never did it" adds nothing. Whether he has burnt down classrooms in the past isn't in question (at the current time.)
If it is further alleged that he has a history of burning down schools, "I have never done that" woud be appropriate - that is, "I didn't do it on Saturday, and I have never done it prior to Saturday."
I've always hated "I never did it" to mean "I didn't do it."
Of course, if the accusation was that, on several occasions on which "this" was down, it was he who did it, then "I never did it" might work, but I'd still prefer "I've never done it."
Welcome to the forum, vithuran.
We hope you find the forum useful.
In future, please give your threads a more helpful title. 'I never do this?' would have been good for this one.
Please start the first word of a sentence with a capital letter.
In polite requests, 'please'' is generally a more appropriate word than 'kindly,'.
Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
I completely agree that "I didn't do that" is a normal response to a sugestion that you did it once. I was thinking about habitual actions.
Remember, every time Mom and Dad would go out and leave you in charge, you would lock us in the closet and have your friends come over?
Oh my God! Where do you come up with this stuff? I never did that!
Oh, maybe that was Marcia who did that.
