Default meanings

Hi teacher,

I have difficulty understanding the meanings of the following sentences. Would you please give me a hand?

1. I expect my orders to be carried out to the letter.

2. His god was methematics, and he saw to it that the numbers always
came out to his benefit.

3. The gnomes of Zurich were bankers’ bankers.

Thanks a lot.

Default Re: meanings

1- I expect total obedience
2- He used maths or statistics to prove what he wanted
3- Gnome is used to suggest that they are inhuman- presumably because they are such hard bankers that other bankers look up to them for their toughness
