c. else to do except d. interesting to do besides

The key is "b". My question is "what about 'c'"?

No.2

Beyong determination, courage, and vision, I look for studetns with a growing sense of confidence. For I know from experience that confidence is ______necessary credential that ______college studetns must take away with them.

1- after 'except', you'd have a bare inifinitve
2- I can see nothing wrong with c), but b) connects better with the previous sentence becase of the use of 'beyond'
3- They don't by what might be of use, but what is essential
