Question What is the plural of brainchild?

Hello,

Could anybody tell me what the plural of brainchild is? Is it brainchilds or is brainchildren an acceptable word?

Thanks.

I would be apt to say brainchilds, since the -children option would seem to focus more on actual 'kids'. I must admit I'm at a loss with this one.

Naturally, I consulted my favourite online dictionary http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=brainchild, and oddly enough, the plural isn't commented on.

Here's hoping someone can clear it up so we come out of this the wiser!

Google gives 549 for 'brainchilds' and 48,800 for 'brainchildren'. It is a tricky one, like the plural of computer mouse.

Thumbs up Re: What is the plural of brainchild?

That is a really good and challenging question, but, interestingly, my Langenscheid dictionary "Language Man" says that the plural is "brainchildren".

If "brainchild" is viewed as one word, not a compound, then add -s, "brainchilds". If it's viewed as a compound, then "brainchildren".

Note, to my knowledge "brainchild" doesn't have a recognized plural form.
