What is a difference between 'made of' and 'made from' ?

Glass is made from various minerals.
This candlestick is made of glass.

If Y is made from X, X is changed in some way in the manufacture of Y.
If Y is made of X, the nature of X is unchanged (though it may be cut, sawn, moulded, etc).

Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
