Dear all,
What us the meaning of "big league" in:
"His opinion means a lot to me. He knows what he's talking about and he's done everything in the big league. So he knows what they want.""
That was said by a wrestling trainee about his coach.
All the script is capitalized so I can't know if it's a name of an organization or it has another meaning!
Thanks a lot.
Do you not understand what "the big leagues" are in the context of sports, or are you asking what the pro "wrestling" big league is?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWE
WWE is the big leagues in pro "wrestling."
Professional sports have various levels of competition. Take baseball, for example.
Numerous "minor" leagues exist that allow players to develop their skills. When a player shows enough talent, he is called up to the "big league," in this case Major League Baseball, where 30 teams compete in two leagues.
Making it to the big league means you have been recognized as among the top players in your sport.
What does the "they" refer to?
"So he knows what they want."
The "they" refers to the people 'in the big leagues." It can be people with the power - owners, managers, the media, or even the staff.
So if we are translating and we can't define exactly who are "they" we can say that "He competes with top players and knows exactly the requirements of the business"?
I really hope I am right.
Thanks a lot.
