I've never heard that in BrE. We just call them "unmade" roads, as far as I know. If you're being specific you might say you were driving on a farm track or a dirt track.

I have heard this is the US. A field road is usually a dirt (unpaved) road that goes through some sort of field - corn, vegetables, fruit, etc. Such roads are constructed so as to allow the farmers to easily move the produce from the fields.

Agree with Gillnetter and add that there are regional colloquialisms for roads. Where I come from- rural Midwestern US- unpaved public roads are called 'dirt roads' or 'gravel roads'. There are very few dirt roads still in existence.

A private passage for a farmer's individual use as Gillnetter describes would be called a 'lane' where I come from. A gravel or dirt public road so seldom used that grass is growing between two bare strips might be called a 'double track' in describing it, but still refered to as a 'road'. A two-lane, asphalt-paved rural public road is called a 'blacktop'. The same description paved with concrete is called a 'hardroad'.

I've never heard the term 'field road', though I repeat- there are regional and national variations.

I'm familiar with "blacktop" as a description of a road's surface, but not to be used to name a road. Never heard any road called a "hardroad."

"Dirt road" is common for me. Or even simply "unpaved road."

"Land road" doesn't make any sense to me at all.
