    Default grammar

The damage caused by the hurricane was the worst than had ever occured in that state.
There is one mistake in this sentence and I know it is than. But I don't know what we should put in its place that , nothing or something else that I don't know?
    Thanks

    (Not a Teacher)

I'd replace "than" with a "that".

SlickVic has given you the answer. I'm curious, though, to know how you thought that "than" could be omitted but not replaced with anything.

The damage caused by the hurrican was the worst had ever occurred in that state.

Does that sound natural to you?
