In Korea, we call actors or actresses appearing on TV dramas "talent". We just call them "talent" which may sound Korean-style English. What do native speakers call such people? Isn't there any boundary to distinguish them from movie stars? Do they just call them actors in general? But in Korea, it's divided as talent for TV, and movie stars for movies, and they might not be correct English.
ex)talent(TV) vs movie stars(movies)
We just call them actors and if we wish to differentiate, then "TV actors" and "film actors", as opposed to "stage/theatre actors".
The only time I've heart "talent" used in TV is for the anchors who deliver the news. This is not a use of the word that most people are familiar with.
In the US, actors (I understand in Hollywood, they use that word for both male and female performers) move from the "small screen" (TV) to the "big screen" (movies) and back again frequently. Is it not the same in Korea?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
Yes, many actors are going back and forth between TV and movies, but some TV actors don't appear on movies a lot, and vice versa, so that's why we have a special term "talent" for TV actors. Of course, we call the versatile actors for both TV and movies just "actor" in general.
In businesses like advertising or the hiring out of comedians and speakers for events such as corporate dinners etc, the models, actors and performers are referred to as "the talent". On an advertising shoot the actors are called "the talent", differentiating them from the photographer, set dresser or make-up artist who, of course, may have talents of their own.
Here is a quote from a US agency which hires out speakers and entertainers:
"There are times when the talent has traffic or navigation issues and is running late. If the talent is not on time and you are getting nervous, please contact us ASAP."
Perhaps this use of "talent" has become the norm in Korean TV.
