Do you know the origin of "blind date", is it because the date feels like as if you were blind-folded without knowing any information of the date partner before you meet her or him?

ex)I went to a blind date,but I was really disappointed at the nasty girl.

I suppose that explanation is as good as any. I think of it as a blind date because I have never seen the other person before.
