What is the correct form of this sentence?

I am trying to write a sentence like this.. But I feel that it is not grammatically correct. Anyone plese suggest me the correct form.

"This incident reminded them how dangerous the journey they have begun was."

I feel somethign is amiss. Plese suggest.I want the correct grammatical form of boldened text.

Change "have" to "had".
