    Default present perfect tense?

I read this in a book

"I have been away on holidays and I have just returned to the office"

Why did the writer use "have been away" and not "was on holidays?

Because his absence extended up to the moment of speaking, or very shortly before that.

Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
