Please, what is the meaning of the following words in the sentences below:

a) In the bin was a plastic jammed full of torn up notes.

b) Stick-up job on torn bank notes leaves schoolgirls $ 1,200 richer.

stick-up has two meanings :
One meaning is hold-up,that is,a situation that stops something from happening or making progress. traffic hold-ups etc..
The other meaning is an attempt to rob a person or place by threatening them with a weapon.

I am unable to draw parallels between your example sentence and the actual meaning of the word. My assumption is that the girls haven't attempted extortion. They might have cajoled the cashier into exchanging the torn notes. Because it had made them richer, therfore, they have got more than their share. Sorry if iam wrong.

I think the first sentence should read 'In the bin was a plastic BAG jammed full of torn up notes'.
This would mean that the notes (paper money)were filling the bag as completely as jam fills a jar.

'Stick-up job on torn bank notes leaves schoolgirls $ 1,200 richer.'
This stick-up refers to the action of sticking the bank notes back together again. When they had done that, the notes were legal tender again, and could be accepted by a bank.

Hi jenny,

Contexually, that's what the word should mean which is predictable. But actually with the meaning of the words in place it sounds different.
