Default the spirit of an old, withered tree

“I really don’t know that much about her,” the old man replied, knitting his brow like the spirit of an old, withered tree.
    (H. Murakami; 1Q84)

What kind of spirit do you see when you're reading it?

    Thanks.

    Who knows?

    What's the next sentence?

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

The next sentences, as well as the previous ones, seem to be completely unrelated to this simile.

It's a metaphor describing the wrinkly pattern of his forehead when he knits his brow; it is warped and gnarled like a withered tree.
