A foreign friend recently referred to England, as "The England" I pointed our to her that just saying England is correct. She asked me why, because her teacher had told her otherwise, however, I could not explain why to her.I am assuming, of course, that she was incorrect.

The name of the country is the England. We do not use articles with the name of a country, unless that name is a description of its political nature: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States of America.
