Could someone please help me split these words into syllables?
area
special
raised
Thanks.
Julie.
Hi Julie,
Most dictionary entries do this for you. Take a look and let us know if what you find confuses you.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
Most dictionaries will give you how to divide words into syllables.
Here's an example
Area | Define Area at Dictionary.com
In brackets you will find how to pronounce area and right next to it on the left you'll find its syllables.
Hope this works for you
I found that particular word breakdown rather interesting. If asked, I would break down "area" into:
air-ree-uh
I realise there aren't two "R"s in it, but I feel that the first syllable simply sounds like the word "air" in BrE (not with the AmE pronounced R), then the second syllable sounds with the R sound.
Is it just me?
