I found that particular word breakdown rather interesting. If asked, I would break down "area" into:

air-ree-uh

I realise there aren't two "R"s in it, but I feel that the first syllable simply sounds like the word "air" in BrE (not with the AmE pronounced R), then the second syllable sounds with the R sound.

Is it just me?

I agree, though I'd write it rather differently. For me it's a-re-a, /ˈeə-rɪ-ə/
