Question many a time

I've always wondered about the expression "many a time".
If it's 'many' then why "a time" which is singular? Is there a grammatical rule explaining this phenomenon?

I asked this question once & some guys in this forum answered me ,
here is their replies:<maybe it can help you>
""This is just one way we say this in English. It means the same as, "many times". It's a bit more literary than the usual form.It's a poetic and archaic form of the pharse .""
