Forgetting the "breath" problem, and subtituting, say, swimming: Let's say you're doing a training program for swimming. It's too heavy for you at the moment because you have some temporary illness. Your coach might say, "OK, but do one lap of the pool each day. When you're well again you can pick it (the training program) back up more easily, as long as you at least do one lap in the pool every day.
You'll have to adapt that to your breathing context as best you can.

Yes. As Raymott says, the original text is talking about mindfulness meditation using breath. It's a practice to pay attention to your breath once a day, not taking a breath a day literally.
