FOR or DURING

Dear teachers,

What should I use here "for" or "during"?

FOR / DURING (?) the past few years, he has only been thinking about himself.

Is this sentence correct ?
I didn't want to work anymore, FOR the rest of my life ! (or should I say "I DON'T want to...")

Both options are possible, yet they emphasize a different aspect each. If you say he's only been thinking about himself for the past few years, the focus is on the past few years, if you say during, the focus is on the "he has only been thinking about himself".
