I have joined the two sentences with options as follows:

John cannot leave the school early unless he has sought / had sought / seeks the Principal's approval.

I think I would use 'has sought' although the second choice seems possible. I believe the thrid choice is out. If none of the choices is correct, could someone help me with the correct answer?

Both "has sought" and "seeks" are possible. "Had sought" is not appropriate.
