Im confused

I am reading a biography and my understanding of the english language isnt the best :(. But I am getting better.


At the beginning of the biography it says

""About 4 years ago, about a year after my operation, I was looking for a new sporting activity and came upon a self defence class. Soon afterwards, and as a direct consequence, I started kickboxing".


I have 2 questions that i find it hard to work out cos of my reading abilities.


a) This was written in 2012.. what year was the operation?.... and what year did he start looking for a sport?

b) What was the kickboxing after?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't understand why your knowledge of the English language is not the best, when you have given English as your native language.
