    Default to or for

We have left a voice mail for Justin

    or

We have left a voice mail to Justin.

Which of the above is correct.

    Can someone explain.

To or for - always confusing.

    Thanks,
    Ganesh.

We would use "for" in that sentence. The explanation: that's just how we say it.

We use "for" when talking about the recipient or the intended recipient of something or when doing something on someone else's behalf.

I left a voicemail for John.
I bought a cake for my mother.

He posted the letter for his mother. (Note: this is not the same as "He posted the letter to his mother." It means his mother had a letter which needed to be put in the postbox. He took the letter on behalf of his mother and put it in the postbox).
