    Default that kind of +a + N?

Is the word "a" in this sentence necessary or not:

"Funny, I've never figured you were that kind of a doctor"
"Funny, I've never figured you were that kind of doctor"

Please give reason(s) for your choice.

I've just made these two up off the top of my head so it may sound weird and contain several grammatical errors. If you can find them, feel free to correct them

Both are acceptable, but we normally omit the article.

Please give reason(s) for your choice. That's the way it is.

Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
