    Default standard english

Is the term Standard English archaic? Or are there 'Standard Englishes' like Standard British English,Standard Australian English and Standard American English? I am also wondering whether there is a Standard Indian English. Or rather, can the variety of English spoken in the Philippines and Nigeria designated as Standard English

The term 'Standard English' is not rigidly defined. In this forum we tend to use it loosely as that language generally used in semi-formal speech and writing by reasonably educated native speakers in Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. We can also speak of Standard British English, though this frequently means Standard English English. If people use 'Standard (X) English', they really need to define it, though few do outside academic writing.

Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
