    Default adjectives

    Are these sentences correct:

1-They beat John up in the alley, young and innocent.
2-They beat John up in the alley, a young and innocent man.

3-They beat John up in the alley, young and innocent.
4-They beat John up in the alley, a young and innocent man.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

Better, in my opinion, though still a little clumsy: They beat up John, a young and innocent man, in the alley.

Now that is less clumsy. (Even if the alley has become a valley )

Oh, yes. That must have been be a Freudian slip, though I can't imagine its significance. Of course, if it's unconscious, I wouldn't! Anyhow, I like it, so I'm sticking to 'valley'.

    Thank you 5jj and Raymott.

Actually I made the slip! I meant to write "valley" but I wrote "alley". So Raymott just corrected my mistake. As usual.

That's quite surprising. I would have expected "alley" to be correct. I would venture to suggest that more people are beaten up in alleys than in valleys!
