I have two difficulties with two sentences
Dears:
I have been reading” “David Coppefield" and I met two difficulties;
1. In this sentence: she asked me for some water and then gave me such a patient smile.
is "a patient smile" here the same as "a peaceful smile"?
2. it was sad saying goodbye to my mother
I've learnt a kind of grammar is "it is + adj to do", is "it is + adj. doing" also right? or it is a exception?
thanks!

Re: I have two difficulties with two sentences
1 No, although it probably is peaceful as well - it's more a sense of indulging an error or incompetence or potentially annoying behaviour, 'putting up with it'. Perhaps I've guessed the context wrong, but is it Peggotty being maternal to young David?
2 It's not an exceptional. The focus was on the event. It's usually sad to say goodbye to one's mother, but in this case David is thinking how sad the event was.

Thank you very much. You remembered the names of characters!In fact it was the moment that David's mother was dying. Thanks again.

If you have further difficulties with two sentences, reneehcl, please ask them in two separate threads with a title for each telling us what it is about - such as A patient smile and It was sad saying goodbye.
