Default two questions

Hi Teacher,

Could you please tell me the meanings of the parts in red?

1.A:I have been getting all kinds of urgent communiqué about you. What
have you done?
B: It’s a long story. And I haven’t time. What have you heard?
A: That you’ve gone private. That you’ve been turned and
are singing like canary
.
B: What?
A: I heard you’ve made a deal with the Chinese.

Thanks a lot.

2. The assistant manger showed her the huge bedroom with a large canopied
bed in the center. What a waste, Pier thought. In one night,
I could make a fortune here.
