Default Interchangeable or separate use of preposition

Hello out there,

This one has me stumped. Is it possible that the prepositions "by" and "with" are not interchangeable in these two sentences, despite the meaning more or less being the same?:

"I always go by my instincts."

"I’m going to go with my instincts on this one."

I think they could be used in both examples, though 'with' sounds more natural n the second.

Thanks again tdol.

The subtleties behind prepositions amaze me to no end. I'm sure glad I don't have to teach this stuff! Of course there I'd be implying that we were dealing with an 'exact science.'

And, of course, if you take the possessive adjective out, you would only use 'by'.
