Default Should I use "When" or "while"? Thanks for advising, teachers

Dear teachers,

I wonder if I should use "When" or "While" in the following sentences.

(When or While) I was going for recess, I fell down the stairs.
Can we use "when" to begin the sentence?

Would you be able to explain the difference between "when" and "while" when applying it in situations like the sentence above? Thanks soooo much for helping again, Help Wanted

You could use either. Geerally, 'while' gives more emphasis to the length of the action. Here, I would be more likely to use 'when'.
