Default Flesch- Kincaid Reading Scale

Can anyone assist me in understanding the F/K rating system.
I am currently using MS Word 2000 and when I finish writing reports and select spell check, MS Word 2000 provides a template with a F/K rating
on passive % and reading scale: currently the passive % is between 28- 39 % and the reading scale is 12.0- 12.+.

My questions concern whether or not I am doing alright with my report writing or if I am really low on the score board... I have looked over the web page and saw the basic info on the F/K scale but it did not reference a baseline.... any help would be appreciated.

I personally have grave doubts about the validity of the passive rating as it is based on a dubious premise. There is nothing wrong with the passive as long as it is used appropriately. I think Word have oversimplified something here.
