    I don't think "be on to" is the same meaning "be onto something"

    Hi Cassie,
    I agree with with Archie that the context is important but I haven't heard 'be onto something' without 'be'. To 'be onto something' means that you have found out about something that you weren't previously aware of. You'll often hear it used in movies as - 'you're on to something there!' - with 'are' as a form of the verb 'to be'.
