"In exile"

I know a person can be called an "exile' if they live away from their native country because they've either been barred from that country, or they have made a personal choice to leave. I'm wondering if you can say a person is "in exile" if they leave their native country voluntarily. The definition in the dictionary I'm looking at would suggest not, but I'm not sure.

Although the concept of "banishment" is inherent in the original meaning of "exile", it is often used to mean living away from one's native land for any number of reasons, including being a voluntary expatriate. Sometimes the situation is made clear by a usage such as: "He has returned home after five years of voluntary exile in Europe".
