Question retained object

Hi everybody,

Would you please explain “retained object” for me?

It's an object that is used in both the active and passive sentence:
I sent them an answer.
They were sent an answer.

'Answer' is a retained object- it is the object in the passive sentence, so where we have ditransitive verbs, one will become the subject of he passive sentence and the other will be the retained object.

The active sentence has a direct and an indiect object. The indirect object normally becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
