I suppose you'd like us to explain which of the words in parentheses is the most appropriate?

Without more context, either would be fine. It depends on the context....

Context 1:
By attending school, I continue to learn valuable lessons about life. I learn that if you fight with others, you will get hurt and be punished. I learn that motivation is key to success.

Context 2:
Last year, I learnt/learned many new things while attending school. I learnt/learned that if you fight with others, you will get hurt and be punished. I learnt/learned that motivation is key to success.

I'd say that without further context, I'd prefer the present perfect.
