Default General - positive? negative? or what?

Hi
I wonder if I use the word 'general' correctly.

Johan is a general fan of the club, who has been devoting tons of his time in promoting the club activities.

A friend said that I used 'general' wrongly because I tried to emphasize Johan's hardwork but the word 'general' seems to make the meaning awkward. ... Like, calling him a general fan doesn't sound great at all.

Any other word to replace it? Or, should I just delete it? Any advise? Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't use it. How about great/keen/loyal/devoted/enthusiastic?
