1-) I was going to rent a motorbike but I rented a car instead.
2-) I would rent a motorbike but I rented a car instead.
Now that “will” and “going to” are sometimes used interchangeably with almost no difference in meaning, I wonder if we can also use “would” and “was/were going to” in the same way.

The second sentence doesn't work for me- 'would' in the past can be like 'used to' so it's sounds unclear and doesn't give the same idea. .-)
