| When using a saying verb such as "exclaimed", does the sentence which follows or goes before it must have an exclamation mark? For example: "It isn't fair!" exclaimed Sue. Can I use "exclaimed" here? "There's a prickle in my tongue. It hurts badly," Sue exclaimed. Question 2: Where should I put the exclamation mark? "Hello, Grace! I didn't expect to see you here." OR "Hello, Grace. I didn't expect to see you here!" Should I put it after "Grace" or after the word "here"? Please advise, thanks teachers Last edited by Help Wanted; 26-Nov-2005 at 04:45. |

| 1- I don't think there are any hard and fast rules- you'll see exclamation marks and other punctuation being used. The natural place for it would be after 'badly' to emphasise the suffering. 2- I'd put it where the surprise would have been. In your example, the surprise could come in either place, depending on the context. I would probably put it at the end, though. Last edited by Tdol; 27-Nov-2005 at 06:43. |
