English
What are words that are shortened versions of a longer word (i.e. "auto" for automobile) called, and where can I find a list of them?

They're called "Clippings". (Syllables are clipped, or cut from the word)
math = mathematics
sub = substitute or submarine
auto = automobile

Clipped Words
Sometimes the clipping is done from the beginning. Sometimes it is done from the end. Sometimes the word is clipped and the spelling is altered slightly. Examples:
- auto = automobile
photo = photograph
cab = cabriolet, taxicab
demo = demonstration
doc = doctor
coke = cocaine
gent = gentleman
gym = gumnasium
mike = microphone
taxi = taxicab
plane = airplane
Here is a list:

Here is another list:

How's that?
