what does "return" mean?

what does "returned" mean in the sentence "When my HIV test results returned positive, I was shocked and confused".

Firstly, I sincerely hope that wasn't yourself.

returned can be substituted for "were". It simply means that "when you got your HIV test back", they were positive. Its probably best to use returned, as you will normally get the test results at a later date, blood test etc.
