I understand 'air hostess' and 'stewardess'
are pc words and that 'flight attendant' is
used now. But was it like this in the past?

Yes, we used 'air hostess' in the UK and I gather from watching American films that they used 'stewardess,.

And if you wanted to be really un-pc, you could use 'trolly dolly'.
