i just cant think of the word. its on the tip of my tongue. its when you can read ANOTHER languages , such as writing on signs or places etc. in another country, but it is actually an english word spelled in their language.
is there a specific term for this? thx
"Transliteration"?
MrP
is that the only possible wordthat you can call it? i thought it may be different than that
I think it may "borrowing"
or loan-translation= calque
"Borrowing" might be it...
I think "calque" is where you take a word in language X (usually a compound word, such as "eggplant" or "overdrive") and create a new word in language Y by direct word-for-word translation. Thus "gratte-ciel" in French is a calque of "skyscraper".
