"The x gulf" or "x gulf"
Hi
Could you say if we use the article "the" before a gulf. The x gulf/ x gulf.
Thanks a lot.

What sort of 'gulf' are you asking about?
After 258 posts, you should know that we need context if we are to give a useful response.

Context is important. Please provide enough for us to be able to deal effectively with your question.
Your thread title should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.
If you just want to know the meaning of a word, try OneLook Dictionary Search first.

Sorry, I thought like some other rules regarding the use of the for these one there is also a rule. For example, for deserts we need "the" : the Sahara desert. For lakes we don't use "the" : Lake Caspian. For sea we need "the" : The Red sea. So I thought for "gulf" there is also a rule. I know a context can help more but to be honest I didn't know even for this there should be one
. Sorry. Really there's no context. I came across it in class. Should we say "the Persian Gulf" or "Persian Gulf"?
Thanks a lot.

It's 'the PersianGulf' or 'the Arabian Gulf', depending on where you come from.
We need context, because 'gulf' has more than one meaning.

Re: "The x gulf" or "x gulf"
The Gulf of Mexico.
The Gulf of Gibraltar.
As you can see, you need the article whether the word "Gulf" comes first, as in my examples above, or later, as in "the Arabian Gulf".
