    Is this understanding correct?
    1. apart from...; aside from... - AmE
    2. apart from... (not aside from) - BrE

    In BrE we can use 'aside from'- I wouldn't say 'aside from John', but I would say 'aside from that'.

    Thank you very much, tdol. That means the name of a person doesn't come after 'aside from'? 'Apart from John' is OK?

    I wouldn't say it would be an error, but it would be a much less common collocation in BrE.
