Learn the words that are the most important to you. Those are the ones you will remember easiest.

One method that might help you is to learn words in related groups. Examples would be:
1. Household items: chair, refrigerator, table, picture, bed, door, window, etc. One can actually stand in a room so that a mental picture develops with the word.
2. Verbs having to do with sports: swim, jog, exercise, hit a ball, shoot a ball, throw a pass, etc.

After building a "basic everyday essential" vocabulary, it comes down to building one's personal lexicon. Though there is some gray area between "basic everyday essential" vocabulary and "personal lexicon". Language is vast. All in my opinion of course. 8) :)
