Placed in a small, experiemetal school that was wrong for me, afraid to join my peers in their bumptious rush into adolescent boyhood, i withdrew into passivity and loneliness.
what does "to join my peers in their bumptious rush into adolescent boyhood" mean here?

Well, I'm not a native...my mother tongue is Persian, but this is what I get:
When boys (who are peers here) reach adolescence they change rapidly (bumptious rush) both physically and mentally. And this person is not able to be like them.
